Newcastle music artist Paul Flaherty called Ian 'Candy' Sandercoe in Sydney with a contact to Newcastle based musician Brien McVernon (Phantom Agents) who was forming a pop rock covers/originals band. Members of the original line-up included: James Davis-keyboard/piano, Brien McVernon-bass, Ian 'Candy' Sandercoe-vocal, Craig 'Rosie' Rosevear-drums and Paul Flaherty-guitar. Rehearsal began at Tony Heads Downie Street Maryville Studio. Later Newcastle musicians Mark Tinson-guitar replaced Paul Flaherty and Gary Wilson replaced Craig 'Rosie' Rosevear and Gary Wilson was later to be replaced by Steve 'Mac' McLennan.
Raiding Party released their first single Loveland, which achieved local success with the single vinyl Loveland on the 23rd August 1989 at The Cambridge Hotel Newcastle. Loveland was written by Brien McVernon with credits to Raiding Party members. The single charted locally moving from 38 to 8 within a week, followed by the National charts (top 100).
The single vinyl record Til Love Makes Me Cry A-side was recorded at Col Joy's studio in Sydney Australia. The single was produced and remixed by Mark S Berry (Billy Idol, David Bowie and Joan Jet). Engineered by Brett Coupland and mastered by Mike Papas in 1990. Til Love makes me cry was written by James Davis with credits to Raiding Party members, the cost of this single was over $10,000 AUD. The B side of the single No Retreat was recorded live at the Castle Tavern King Street Newcastle in April 1990. No Retreat was written by Ian Sandercoe in 1987, with credits to Raiding Party members in 1988. Additional songs from Raiding Party - Tell Me Why, Be A Man, Dangerous, Sinner and Turn Me On.
By 1989 Raiding Party was performing over two hundred live shows a year. In March 1989 Ralph Carr from Standard Music Melbourne saw Raiding Party and began looking for industry interest. It was suggested Raiding Party release the cover Steppin’ Stone. Ian Sandercoe was invited to attend the ARIA Awards in 1989 with Ralph Carr. The band played continuously over the Hunter region to Sydney. Songs written in 1989 by Ian Sandercoe included: Talk to You, Been There, Handyman and Rescue Me and in 1990 Big-time. Until September 1990 Bob Spencer (The Angels) regularly guest starred with Raiding Party.
Live shows included: NBN Television, Skynova with 20,000 people on Newcastle foreshore and many other local events.
